TUGBA'S BLUE PERIOD
My name is Tuğba Yazıcı. This exhibition is a story about “Tugba's Blue Period”.
My inspiration comes from The Little Mermaid. You already know the story... It is the tale of a young mermaid who is ready to give up her life at sea for the sake of her love and dreams. As a result of the agreement she made with the Sea Witch, she gives up her tail and has beautiful legs in exchange for her ability to speak. Even if she tried she could not tell her story, no one would understand her because she comes from another world. The Little Mermaid cannot speak at the end of the story. As a result she runs out of the time that was granted to her and she eventually mixes with the waves and becomes seafoam.
My Question
Was “The Little Mermaid” also an immigrant?
I have a story
While reflecting her feelings with my art, I wanted to change the ending of the story. I depicted the "Little Mermaid" in my artwork, but I showed her culture with motifs and colors and explained her character differently. She shows the audience that she was part of a colorful and patterned mosaic. Studies that bring acceptance and understanding have resulted in new findings with the motivation of:
"Think with your heart, but also take your mind with you .” Reborn from my Ashes”
“Don't Enter My Boundaries”
“My codes are hidden in my culture”
Some of my works reflect both culture and geography; The retention of some of the motifs and the deletion of others describes the transformation. The works titled Vortices and Protecting Borders represent how challenging the transformation is. The art pieces in Tugba's Blue Period are my works between 2017 and 2020. With these works, I gave art talks at Northampton Smith College. They were exhibited in Boston, MA: New York Art Expo, NY; Exhibited in the Carrousel du Louvre, Paris, and they also met with an audience in Miami during the Blue Period. Whatever I did was not to search for identity, but to explain who I am.
I always tried to portray women's emotions in my paintings. I include sadness, happiness, relief, thought, and joy. I also adapted these to daily life.
With my own designer identity; I aimed to deliver them to many parts of the world, sometimes with a sweatshirt, sometimes with a bag or scarf, with the motto "Portable Art". My life & home has changed over time. I added new colors and new subjects into my works to show these changes. At first, this feeling was enough for me, but now I combine my paintings with stories. Just like the Little Mermaid story, these works talk about those who can change their lives for the sake of their dreams.
My works, which I combine with fashion, can be seen in many parts of the world today.
